영국 런던예술대학원(University Art of London)에서 공간디자인으로 석사 학위를 받고, 현재 Wilson Associates의 Associate 디자이너로서, 세계 각지의 리조트, 호텔&카지노디자인 디벨롭먼트 부분을 담당하고 있다. 영국 런던 한인 예술인 협회에 소속 작가로 활동 하였으며, 예술과 디자인에 관련해 영국 및 싱가포르에 거주하며 이슈 작가 및 작품을 한국에 알리는 글을 써 왔다. 현재 중국의 한 매체와 협력하여 ‘디자인 스토리’ 중국어 버전도 기획 중이다.

Jimi Lim, the writer of this article, received a master’s degree in spatial design from University of the Arts London and presently serves as an associate designer at Wilson Associates, managing the design development of resorts, hotels and casinos throughout the world. He worked as an artist at the Korean Artists’ Association in London, UK and has written about rising artists and their works of art and design. He is preparing the ‘hotel design story’ for design magazine in China and it will be published.

Executive Lounge

Take me to the Hilton 마치 영화의 한 대사같은 이 문구는 힐튼 호텔의 최근 광고 카피이다. 천국의 도시(天府之国;Country of Heaven)로도 일컬어지는 청두 지역과 호텔의 연관성을 생각한다면 마치 천국인 그곳으로 날인도하라는 함축적 의미가 느껴지는 문구다. 청두(Chéngdū)는 중화인민공화국 서남부 쓰촨성의 청사 소재지이며, 힐튼 청두(Hilton Chengdu)는 서부 대개발 사업을 계기로 중요성이 더해가고 있는 청두 최첨단 산업단지의 중심에 위치해 있다. 트러스톤자산운용(싱가포르)의 강우종 애널리스트의 말에 따르면 중국의 각종 사업이 동부 해안가 일대 1~2선 도시에서 남서부 3~4선 도시로 확장되는 분위기라 한다. 중국의 남서부 시장은 동부 해안가에 비해 소비 규모가 커질 가능성이 크고, 개발이 덜 돼 있어 최근 수 년 동안에 HORECA(HOtel, REstaurant, CAfe) 산업에서 급격한 성장을 보이는 것이다. 중국 남서부 지역의 중심 항구도시이며, 중국에서 고대의 면모를 가장 많이 간직하고 있는 도시 중 하나인 청두는 리츠칼튼, 하얏트, 만다린오리엔탈, 월도프, W호텔 등 글로벌 호텔 경영그룹사들의 큰 관심과 선호를 받고 있는 중이다.

외부디자인 키워드_ 프리즘(Prism), 광택(Polished), 수정체(Crystallization)

힐튼 청두 호텔의 내부 디자인은 윌슨 어소시에이츠에서 맡았고, 호텔 외부는 건축 디자인과 엔지니어링 및 프로젝트 매니지먼트에 두각을 나타내는 Atkins에 의해 새로 지어졌으며, 크리스탈에서 영감을 얻어 만들어진 프리즘(Prism), 광택(Polished), 수정체(Crystallization)라는 디자인 키워드는 건물외부 및 내부에 영향을 끼친다. 건물 지붕부분과 입구부분은 수정체 구조로 안에서 비춰지는 각각의 다른 조명의 설치로 외부에서는 다양한 색채가 보여진다. 건축물의 외부와 내부의 연관성과 밀접한 관계를 유지하는 것이 이번 프로젝트의 핵심이다. 이에 디자이너는 건축가와 긴밀하게 소통하고 자신의 의견을 밀고 당기며 최대한 클라이언트에게 효율적이고, 편안하고, 합리적인 공간을 제공하기 위해 노력했다.

디자이너 조셉 “조이” 크루즈(Joseph “Joey” Cruz)

이번 프로젝트를 담당한 Associate Principal, Joseph “Joey” Cruz는 호텔, 리조트 및 카지노 부분의 전문가이자 미국 라스베가스에서 수많은 프로젝트에 참여했다. Joey는 자기 자신을 스토리텔러라고 말한다. 디자이너로서 자신이 말하고자 하는 이야기의 시작을 설정하고, 마무리를 미리 예견하는 하나의 탄탄한 스토리를 만들어 크고 작은 아이디어들을 팀원들과 공유하고 의논하며 프로젝트의 시작부터 끝을 미리 계획하는 것이 그의 작업스타일이다. 호텔이 완성되기에는 수 년이 걸리는 만큼 이러한 기획력과 예지력은 장기적으로 좋은 결과를 만드는데 아주 큰 역할을 한다.

내부디자인 키워드_ 프리즈매틱(Pris․mat․ic)

청두 힐튼 호텔의 내부디자인을 위한 키워드인 프리즈매틱(Pris․mat․ic)은 사전적 의미로는 ‘프리즘으로 형성된’이라는 형용사이며, 영국을 기반으로한 글로벌 트렌드 정보 회사 스타일러스가 발표한 2016 컬러 트렌드의 첫 번째 키워드이기도 하다. 프리즈매틱의 특징은 유리와 금속 등의 재료가 빛과 만나 굴절과 반사에 의해 다양한 컬러가 나타나는 것이고, 그 빛이 반응하는 재료에 따라 예기치 못한 또 다른 컬러들이 만들어지는 것이다. 또한 보는 위치에 따라 색이 변하며 공간 전체에 생동감을 가져다준다. 디자이너는 이러한 특징들을 호텔 부분 부분에 알맞게 적용했다. 1층의 로비 라운지 공간에서는 7.7m의 천정고와 웅장한 유선형 계단 및 곡선을 적용한 공간 레이아웃, 원형 바 테이블의 배치에 의해 공간 전체에 웅장함과 생동감이 동시에 느껴진다. 바닥재로는 12가지 색상의 실을 손으로 직접 자수해 만드는 핸드 터프테드 카펫(HAND TUFTED INSET CARPET) 에 기하학적 디자인 패턴을 적용해 포인트를 줬다. 천정 디자인은 은하수에서 영감을 받았으며, 디자이너의 아이디어와 유리 오브제 장인의 정성이 돋보이는 수제 버블 글라스들은 마치 밤하늘 별들이 하늘거리는 듯하다. 또한 천정의 유리 오브제들과 가구들은 카멜(Camel), 코발트 블루(Cobalt blue), 앰버(Amber) 색상으로 매치돼 서로 조화를 이루는 동시에 하나의 공간임을 느끼는 장소성을 제공한다.

리셉션 공간에서는 천정과 벽을 하나의 패턴으로 연결해 로비 라운지부터 리셉션까지의 방향성을 보여준다. 특히 천정 디자인은 기하학적인 정육각형 패턴 안에 레이어층을 적용해 각각의 패턴에 깊이감이 느껴지게 했고, 그 안에 조명을 설치해 그 모양들을 하나하나 최대한 강조했다. 바닥과 벽체 및 카운터에서 서로 색의 대비는 보이지만, 천정의 패턴에 영향을 주지 않기 위해 차분하면서도 간결하게 표현됐으며, Accent Chair들은 지친 여행객들의 피로를 달래준다.

이외에 이그제큐티브 라운지, 객실, 수영장, 미팅룸, 그랜드 볼룸들은 각 공간의 특성에 맞게 만들어진 핸드 메이드 오브제들 및 조명기구들과 카펫 디자인, 패턴의 방향을 다르게 적용한 바닥 타일 그리고 같은 재질이라도 벽의 패턴을 서로 다르게 적용해 공간마다 새로운 느낌을 갖게 했다. 또한 유리와 메탈의 반사 재질을 적절히 사용해 전체적으로 따뜻하면서도 부분적으로는 강인한 세련미가 느껴지게 했다. 이처럼 호텔 내부 디자인은 프리즈매틱이라는 콘셉트 아래 다양하면서도 절제된 표현기법으로 디자인됐다.

마지막으로 레스토랑 부분은 윌슨 어소시에이츠의 F&B 디자인 전문인 블루 플레잇 스튜디오에서 디자인했다. 컬러 계획에 있어 레스토랑 공간은 다른 공간들보다 중국이라는 장소적 특성에 맞게 화려하게 설정됐으며, Crystal Glass Beads와 Ivory Acrylic Sheets으로 이뤄진 조명들을 통해 전체적으로 프리즈매틱 콘셉트는 유지됐다. 중국 전통 문양의 패턴과 고가구에서 영감을 얻어 디자인된 Console, Dining Table, Side Table, Arm chair들이 적절히 배치됐다.

건축가와 실내 디자이너, 협의와 디테일한 조정 통해 공동작품 탄생

건축가와 실내 디자이너는 각기 다른 차원의 접근방식을 추구하기도 하지만, 서로 공생하는밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 건축가가 주변 환경과 건축물이 놓일 역사적 부위를 가늠하면서 프로젝트를 한다면 실내 디자이너는 그 건축물 안에 살아갈 사람들의 심리와 라이프 스타일을 마치 접사(接寫)하듯 주도면밀하게 관찰해 주위 환경을 ‘뛰어넘는’ 혹은, ‘전혀 다른 차원’의 시각과 입장을 디자인을 통해 공간에 잉태시켜야 한다. 또한 이들은 상호 전문 영역을 가지고 공간의 디테일 과정에서 최적의 접점을 찾고 면밀한 구성과 그들 사이의 최적화가 제대로 이루어질 때 비로소 하나의 건축물과 공간 안에서 고객은 최대치의 만족감을 얻을 수 있다. 즉 서로 협의와 디테일한 조정을 통해 산출된, 하나의 공동작품이 탄생하는 것이다.

Lobby Lounge

Take me to the Hilton

Once an oft-quoted and eponymous tagline for the Hilton Hotels brand, this phrase correlates with the region of Chengdu, where Hilton has opened the first of 11 planned hotels for the city. Chengdu is also known as “the Country of Heaven,” and in quoting Hilton’s tagline, one veritably asks to be taken to the “Country of Heaven,” the Hilton Chengdu Hotel.

Chéngdū is the capital of the Sichuan Province, in the southwest region of the People’s Republic of China. Hilton Chengdu is located in the center of Chengdu’s high-tech industrial complex, an area that is developing quickly and serves as a major transportation hub and gateway to inland area, including the Yangtze River Delta region. According to Kang Woo-jong, an analyst of Truston Asset Management in Singapore, a variety of projects in China are expanding from 1st-2nd tier cities in the east coast to 3rd-4th tier cities in the South-west. As this region of China has much potential for new markets to develop, and greater possibilities of consumption, there has been rapid growth in the hotel, restaurant, and cafe industries.

Chengdu, one of the cities maintaining the most ancient aspects in China as a central port city in the Southwest, is an area of interest and preference from global hotel management groups such as Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental, Waldorf-Astoria, and W Hotels.

Exterior Design Keywords_ Prism, Polished, Crystallization

The exterior of the hotel was designed by global architectural firm Atkins. Its design keywords are polished-prism and crystallization of precious gems influenced both the exterior/interior of the building. The porte-cochere rooflines mimic the crystal structure while the installation of different layers of lighting within the structure, provides diverse colours like that of a gemstone,as viewed by passers by from Main Street fronting the building.

Maintaining such close relationship between the interior and exterior of the building is the core of this project. Thus, the Interior Design Architect worked hard to provide the client with the most efficient, comfortable, and custom-tailored space by closely communicating with the architect.

Designer Joseph “Joey” Cruz

As an Associate Principal for Wilson Associates in the Singapore office, Joseph “Joey” Cruz in charge of this project has designed for SLS Hotels, Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Dubai Hills Sales Gallery, Westin Hotel Dalian, Hongqiao Wealine Clubhouse, MGM and Bellagio in US, Asia-Pacific and Middle East Regions as a specialist in the area of hotel, resort, and casino. Joey calls himself a storyteller. His work style is to collaborate with all members of his team from the beginning to the end of a project, by curating the big and small ideas develop by the team, introducing local context and culture to give this story a sense of place. As design and construction of a hotel of this size takes several years to complete, him and his team carefully plan and patiently nurture all aspects of the design to the construction team. This collaborative effort plays an essential role in creating great results in the long term success of the project.

Guest Room

Interior Design Keyword_ Prismatic

‘Prismatic’, the keyword for the interior design of Chengdu Hilton Hotel is an adjective with a lexical meaning of ‘formed by prism’,and also the first keyword of 2016 colour trend announced by Stylus, a global trend information company based on the UK. Regarding the characteristics of prismatic, diverse colours are shown by refraction and reflection when materials like glass and metal meet with light, and unexpected other colours are created depending on materials reflecting to light. Also, the colour changes depending on where it is viewed from, which adds vitality to the whole space. The designer applied such characteristics suitably to each part of the hotel.

In the whole lobby lounge of the 1st floor, the magnificence and vitality can be felt at the same time because of the layout of rounded bar table and space applying the 7.7m ceiling height, and a grand streamlined staircase & curves. In case of the flooring material, the geometric patterns were added as points to the hand tufted inset carpet. The ceiling design was inspired by the galaxy. The handmade blown bubble glass looks like twinkling stars in the night sky. Also, the glass objects in the ceiling and furniture are matched in camel, cobalt blue, and amber colours, so that they are in harmony with each other. In the reception space, the ceiling is connected to the wall with patterns, which shows the directivity from the lobby lounge to the reception. Especially, in case of the ceiling design, each pattern shows a sense of depth by applying layers into the geometric hexagon pattern. Installing lighting in it, each shape was emphasized to the most. Even though there is the contrast of colours in the floor, wall, and counter, they were expressed in a calm and simple tones that will complement the ceiling pattern. The over-sized plush accent chairs are installed as a respite for exhausted tourists and business guests.

On the above floors, the executive lounge, guestrooms, suites, swimming pool, meeting room, and grand ballroom in the basement below,express different feelings to each other by applying handmade objects, lighting fixtures, and carpet designs suitably made for the characteristics of each space, floor tiles with different direction of patterns, and different application of wall patterns even for the same materials. Also, the purposeful use of reflecting materials like glass and metal expressed strong beauty of sophistication. Like this, the interior design of the hotel was diversely and moderately expressed under the concept of prismatic.

Hilton Chengdu also offers a distinctive range of restaurants and lounges, designed by BluePlate Studios, a Wilson Associates studio that specializes in food and beverage design. Yuxi Chinese Restaurant, which was named after the ancient Privy Seal, has 12 private dining rooms for a sophisticated and intimate dining experience. The restaurant serves a fresh and authentic blend of modern Cantonese and Sichuan dishes, including its signature Clay Baked Chicken. The Standard restaurant puts a spotlight on traditional Italian fare with a wood-fired pizza oven, an open kitchen and a display case with a staggering array of hams and cheeses. Fans of al fresco dining have the option of enjoying barbequed delights at the outdoor terrace. All-day dining restaurant Mix has an open kitchen concept and also features the creations of a sushi master chef as part of a collaboration with a local Japanese restaurant. In addition, there is also a sushi counter at Onyx Lobby Lounge, which is a great place to unwind over cocktails or catch up with colleagues and friends over a light meal. For refreshing teas served by a kungfu tea master, guests can stop by the Mahjong Lounge to enjoy teas from across China, Japan and Europe.

The creation of collaboration art between Designer and Architect

Even though architects and interior designers have pursued different design ideas, they also still have close coexistent relationship. When an architect performs a project by estimating the surrounding environment and historical part where the building will be located, an interior designer should create a space ‘exceeding’ the surrounding environment and/or showing ‘totally different’ perspective and position by carefully observing the psychology and lifestyle of people who will be experiencing the building. Also when the close composition is optimized by seeking for the optimal contact point in the detailed process of space based on the expertise, the client can feel the biggest satisfaction in the building and space. In other words, a joint work is created through the mutual consultation and detailed adjustment.
